SEWA IFAD 2004
Over its lifetime, SEWA has maintained relationships with several multilateral organizations especially the United Nations. SEWA's partnership with UN organizations
such as the UNDP and UNIFEM has been steadily growing. However, the partnership with
International Fund for Agricultural Development was new.
After the Gujarat earthquake of 2001, SEWA entered into partnership with the International
Fund for Agriculture Development to support long-term economic rehabilitation for many of
Gujarat's affected households. The innovative feature of this partnership - was true
partnership between IFAD, the national and state governments, and SEWA, a member
based organization.

Exposure and Dialogue Programmes
Drawing upon the inspiration and guidance provided by Dr. Karl Osner and Shri Elaben Bhatt in
Germany, participants spent one week immersed in a local village or urban slum, playing an active
role in the daily functions of a poor family. Appropriately named the 'Exposure and Dialogue
Programme,' the immersion drew the interests of 10 senior officials from WB, KfW and BMZ. The
attendees are engaged in global policy related agendas at their respective organizations in the areas
of poverty reduction, women empowerment, gender issues, and social development (profiles of
guest participants are given as Appendix I).
Inspired by the experience of those who participated in EDPs and that of SEWA, the World Bank
initiated another EDP which was called Grass Root Immersion Programme (GRIP) and executed
in the week of November 9, 2003.
